PAWS & PIXELS: How to find ethical breeders in the AI Era

I must say I can't believe this is something we have to be aware of, but sadly it is and it's very important to ask the right questions! We have been hearing of more and more scams people have been victims of that are very intelligent and believable. Aside from scams, AI can often make the most unexperienced breeders appear more credible and reliable. Thankfully there are a few things that AI just can't fake, and we are going to walk you through the questions to ask when seeking out a responsible, real breeder.

What to ask your perspective breeder,

1.) Can we facetime or video chat with the puppies and/or the moms?

This is the most telling question of them all. There is no reason that a real, responsible breeder would not be willing to video chat aside from the fact that they are not real, or they are ashamed of the condition of their dogs/faculties. Either way, you don't want to move forward there.

2.) Can you provide references from past Puppy Buyers?

If they are a legit breeder who have treated their puppies and customers right, they should absolutely be able to provide you at least one reference. I do understand there are families that want their privacy, but we have found that if you provide a good experience, most people are happy to be contacted as a reference. If they are not willing to offer this, it is a red flag.

3.) Do you offer health guarantees/ genetic testing on your puppies and parents?

This is another big one! Genetic testing is not a hard thing to attain these reports. There is really no reason that a breeder that takes things seriously would not have at least some form of genetic testing done. This is totally something you can ask for from your breeder!

Health Guarantees are another sign of a good breeder. They can vary in what they cover but most of the time that we (or whoever your breeder is) will cover the cost of any genetic issues up to the price of the puppy. Feel free to ask specifics if you are confused or need clarification.

4.) Would you take the puppy back if needed?

This is not so much an ai problem, but this is a very telling question. We always say that good breeders are actually preventing dogs from ending up in shelters because we understand that we are responsible for them even after they are in their new homes. Thankfully this is very rare, but it has to be something your breeder is willing to do and something we have had to do ourselves.

5.) What vaccinations, deworming, and vet care does my puppy receive before going home?

Your puppy will need several different vaccinations and de wormers before they come home to you. This is something that should absolutely be done by your breeder or their vet before they send the puppy home to you. They cannot be fully vaccinated yet if they come home around 10 weeks, but the first round of things should be done. As well as that your puppy should be checked by a vet, and you should be given a written and signed report of their health. The vet will check for things like hip mobility, heart murmurs, teeth placement, ear infections, etc. That being said, it is of course possible for the vet to miss things, but this is a vital step that you need to make sure is part of your breeder's routine.

Overall, we still like to think people are good, but we have heard some wild stories so it's so important to be aware and to be asking the right questions. If you do this, you will be able to sniff out the bad eggs pretty quickly and maybe even report them. Good luck!

The First Week With Your Cavapoochon Puppy

We often joke that bringing home a new puppy is like bringing home a baby...although we say it in jest, there are several major similarities! Nothing to be scared of, but some realities that we believe it is good to be prepared for. Let me break it down for you,

What To Expect with a new Cavapoochon Puppy

All puppies react differently to the first day in their new home, but for the most part they are all fairly similar. We try our best to prepare them for this transition with various different applications, but the reality is they are leaving all that they have ever known and are thrust into a new place with new smells, sounds, people, & other pets. As well as a huge travel day on top of that that often causes an upset belly and some nausea. Because of all this it is common to see some shaking, hiding, slobbering and/or nausea, whining, shyness etc. These should all go away within an hour up to the first night, depending on the dog and if it does not please reach out to us. We will send a blanket that was with your puppies siblings and mama so keep that close for some familiarity.

If your puppy experienced a lot of nausea during their travel home we highly suggest making sure they get a meal and water before bed that night. We send a syringe of water and a high calorie supplement with every dog to ensure you can get something in them if they refuse to eat and drink. This is very rare but has happened so we just want to be sure we cover all the bases!

The First Night with your Cavapoo Puppy

When I say the first night, I really mean the first week sometimes. It is normal to expect whining from your puppy. Sometimes very loud and for a long time and sometimes not at all! It just totally depends, but it is to be expected to some degree. We also suggest taking your pup potty before bed and then once in the middle of the night for the first week they are home. You will quickly figure out your pups bladder capacity! Some pups need to go out more than once, some don't need to at all! You will also figure out where your puppy likes its crate to be. Some like to be alone in a room, some do better with a blanket thrown over it to make it a little more like a cave, and some like it to be placed where they can see you! This can really help the first few days of whining if you can find that sweet spot, but there is also nothing wrong with letting them "cry it out". As long as they have everything they need of course! Regardless of how you choose to go about this, the whining is just a stage and does not last long!

The Daytime Hours/Potty Training

We highly suggest crate training. We have used this personally many times and have seen the crate become a safe and enjoyable place for our dogs. The first few weeks your puppy will spend a lot of time in their crate but once again that does not last long and eventually if they don't learn to love it you can axe the crate all together. I will post our full potty schedule below for reference. Anytime out of the crate will require constant supervision to ensure you are catching accidents and taking them to their potty area :)

A new puppy + free reign of your house = a recipe for disaster. Putting up baby gates or shutting doors to certain areas until they are potty trained is a great idea.

Do Cavapoochon Puppies Chew?

Puppies go through a brutal cycle of losing all of their puppy teeth. While this happens and before the process starts, their teeth really ache and it soothes them to chew. Get them lots of chew toys of various kinds and if they are ever chewing on something they are not supposed to, replace it with a toy. This doesn't last super long and gets dramatically better once their teeth stop aching, but it is something to be aware of! Also don't be startled if you see a tooth pop out :)

In Case I Scared You Off

Yes, there are things to be aware of but let me tell you, the love and joy that little puppy will bring to your home is worth it all. We truly believe God gave us dogs purely for our enjoyment and to feel real unconditional love. They are a blast and only add to your life, never take. The puppy stage can be challenging but we want to be here every step of the way so always feel free to reach out! Our pups love to be outside so take them on lots of walks, get them used to those collars/leashes that they hate so much at first and just have fun!

What are the Best Toys for a Cavapoo Puppy?

You would think a topic like this would not warrant a blog post, but believe it or not, there are a few very important things you need to know! Have no fear, we will give you the full breakdown!

1. Avoid rope toys for a Cavapoo Puppy

While dogs can typically pass foreign objects, a rope can pose a serious threat. If a strand gets swallowed it could possibly cinch around the stomach or intestines and cause serious problems! Instead go for a different tug toy! We will list some options below.

2 . Go for puppy toys with added nutrition!

There are plenty of dog toys that your puppies aching teeth can safely gnaw on and also get nutrition from it! A great option would be Raw Bone Marrow Bones! Cooked bones can be dangerous for them, but the raw ones are a great treat. The marrow provides great collagen and glucosamine to help your dog's coat and bones grow strong!

3. Choose a puppy toy that adds mental stimulation and physical nutrition

If your dog is food focused and gets bored easily, a kong toy is for you! These toys keep them entertained for hours and their hard work profits them treats! You can fill these toys will all kinds of things that add great nutrients to your pups day as well as tons of fun! These are also safe from any choking hazards which is great for a small puppy. Our dogs love when we fill them with peanut butter!

This one is a touch controversial in the dog community! Some say it is a great for dogs' teeth, while others say it can cause blockages in the intestines due to the length of time it takes to digest. We like to err on the side of caution, and there are some great substitutes for this toy so in our opinion, it's just not worth it.

Alfredo - Male

Alfredo was previously reserved, but something came up for his forever family so he is back on the market! He is a curious and intelligent little explorer! He sports a classic deep red curly coat and is always ready for a new adventure! He is one of the smallest of the litter and will likely weigh anywhere from 10-14 lbs!

What is a Cavapoochon?

Cavalier King Charles + Bichon Friese = Cavachon wait, we're not done yet... Cavachon + Poodle = Cavapoochon

Essentially Cavapoochons are 1/4 Cavalier, 1/4 Bichon and 1/2 Poodle

This combo of three individual breeds creates beautiful dogs with wavy to curly hair, longer & somewhat floppy ears, and thick non shedding coats that can have a beautiful variation of colors and markings.

What is the size of a Cavapoochon?

Cavapoochons range anywhere from 12 - 18 lbs depending on the size of their parents and stand anywhere from 11- 14 inches tall. We love this size for the perfect house dog!

What does a Cavapoochon look like?

Cavapoochons are known to look like puppies for their whole lives! They have a variety of coat color and texture which makes it possible to choose the appearance you may be looking for. Common colors are red, apricot, cream, and white. More often then not, they also have beautiful white markings on the darker coats! Their coats range from wavy to curly.

Are Cavapoochons smart?

Thanks to their poodle blood, Cavapoochons are super smart! We often joke that they have enough poodle to be super easily trainable, but not to much to make them stubborn. They are super receptive to treats and praise which makes them highly motivated to learn.

Do Cavapoochons have health issues?

All dogs can be prone to different health issues depending on their breed, but we do find the mixture of these three breeds makes for very healthy dogs! If anything, we see some sensitive tummies coming from the Cavalier portion of them, which can be easily handled with the right type of food, often something with salmon and rice. Of course there can always be fluke things that pop up, but responsible breeders should be able to provide you with genetic testing of the parents to ensure they are not geneitcally predisposed to any issues .

What kind of grooming does a Cavapoochon need?

Frequency of grooming is dependent on your preference for length. We typically recommend a grooming once every few months. More importantly, your cavapoochon will need a daily or weekly brushing out of their fur to prevent mats and knots. Typically your dog thoroughly enjoys a good comb and it can be a great bonding experience for the both of you!

How much exercise does a Cavapoochon need?

We feel the combo of breeds that makes up the Cavapoochon creates a cuddly, yet playful dog. This being said, your puppy will need to get its energy out with around 30-40 mins of exercise per day. This can come in many different forms to fit your lifestyle. They love to walk and run thanks to their poodle blood, but they also require less exercise because of their more laid back Bichon and Cavalier blood. Because of this they do great in apartments or more residential or rural areas.

If you can't tell we LOVE the different variations of the Cavalier, Poodle, & Bichon. We feel like these dogs mixed together hit the genetic jackpot in what we look for in a family pet! So, what actually is the difference in these breeds? Have no fear, I will break it all down for you! Overall, I truly don't think we could pick a favorite between these breeds! When it comes right down to it, they are actually extremely similar! All of them are intelligent, loyal, & playful dogs that make wonderful family pets!

What is a Cavapoochon?

Cavalier King Charles + Bichon Friese = Cavachon we're not done yet... Cavachon + Poodle = Cavapoochon

Essentially Cavapoochons are 1/4 Cavalier, 1/4 Bichon and 1/2 Poodle

They range anywhere from 12-18 lbs depending on the parents!

Why the Cavapoochon?

Where do we begin! We feel like the combo of these breeds with the higher percentage of poodle makes these pups highly trainable. They are quick learners and love to be taught. The poodle blood also gives them energy & a love for play...mixed with that calm Cavalier & Bichon and they are a great balance of cuddly and playful.

What is the coat of the Cavapoochon like?

The Cavapoochon litters for sure offer the most variety between these three breeds. They are hypoallergenic & as non-shedding as a dog can be. They range from curly to wavy, and anywhere from cream to dark red.

What is the Cavapoo?

The Cavapoo is a 50/50 mix between a Cavalier King Charles & a poodle. Cavalier + Poodle = Cavapoo

They range anywhere from 7- 18 lbs also depending on the size of the parents.

Why the Cavapoo?

Due to the even mix of the two, these dogs have a pretty consistent personality of cuddly & playful as well as smart & trainable. They keep that adorable "puppy" look for most of their lives!

What is the coat of the Cavapoochon like?

Although Cavapoos can come in a variety of colors, our parents provide pretty consistent litter colors ranging from tan, dark red, to apricot. Their coats are typically a little curlier, but it is not unheard of to lean more towards the Cavalier and be a little silkier & straighter. They are also hypoallergenic but maybe a TAD less than the Cavapoochon and F1B Cavapoo.

What is an F1b Cavapoo?

That one little "b" makes a big difference! "B" stands for backcross, because the F1b Cavapoo is a first generation Cavapoo backcrossed (bred) with a poodle. So, Cavapoo + Poodle = F1b Cavapoo

They range anywhere from 12-16 lbs..... you guessed it, depending on the parents' size.

Why the F1b Cavapoo?

Like the other two breeds, we love the combo that these pups have that make them sweet & smart. Due to the higher percentage of poodle, F1b's do tend to be a tad smarter and more energetic, but still love to cuddle! They are intelligent, obedient, & affectionate!

What is the coat like on the F1b Cavapoo?

The F1b Cavapoo is hypoallergenic and tend to have a curlier coat due to the high percentage of poodle blood. They come in a full array of colors with red & aprocot being the most common!

5 Questions to Ask Your Puppy Breeder

We believe there are many important reasons people would choose to purchase a puppy from a Reputable Dog Breeder vs adopting from a humane society, etc. (Reference our article explaining that here) but we are the first to admit there are breeders that are not treating their dogs as they deserve and in order to weed out the bad ones and makes sure you are buying from a responsible, dog loving breeder, there are a few questions you can ask to get your answer.

1) Does the puppy come with a health certificate?

This is an important thing to ask because it is imperative that your puppy is getting an overall health screening by a licensed vet before you bring him/her home. There are a number of genetic or hygienic issues a puppy can have that your breeder is responsible for preventing (if possible), making you aware of, or treating! Each and every one of our puppies comes home to you with a clean bill of health from our vet before we would ever feel comfortable sending them home.

2 ) Does the puppy come with a health guarantee?

As your breeder, we are not "done with you" when our puppy becomes yours. Our puppies will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we want to be there for you as they grow. No matter the amount of genetic testing we do, sometimes things happen, and we want to be there to help you navigate that. If your breeder does not offer some type of health guarantee, I would move on. To me that means they are in the business to sell dogs and not because they love them.

3) Were the puppies vaccinated?

So many "back yard breeders" are unaware that puppies need to be started on a vaccination schedule starting in their first few weeks of life. You want to use a breeder who is familiar and knowledgeable about the schedule their puppies are on and working with a vet to ensure the puppies are covered. Our puppies come home with a calendar of what they have been given & the dates they will need their next ones. This way you can hand this over to your vet and they can take it from there!

4) Are the puppies socialized?

As much as I HATE that this is true, there are breeders out there that do not love dogs. Puppies coming from these places are scared, and struggle to accept human love. Naturally, puppies will be scared when they leave their litter mates and all they know but socialized puppies should warm up quickly and be comfortable in your home sooner than later.

5) Do you have references from past buyers?

This is a telltale question that honestly, we love! This means we get to show off our past puppies and get you in touch with some of the great people we get the honor to work with! If a breeder is unwilling to give you references, unless they are just getting started, I would take that as a red flag.

Christmas Cavapoochons | Our Most Unique Litter Yet!

The holidays are coming up and we are thrilled to announce that we had 9 beautiful Cavapoochons! Lots of things about this litter makes them super unique! For one, the array of color is more vast than any litter we have ever had! We have been really digging in to the genes of our parents and in doing so we found some fun facts about the colors they each produce! We used our dad, Sam who is what we call a Parti poodle. Parti poodles have two toned colorways and lots of big white markings on their chests and faces. Sam gave this litter such a beautiful range of colors with lots of unique and intriguing colors. As they are We are obsessed!

Our last few litters seemed to be very boy dominant so as the puppies kept coming and they kept ending up girls we were shocked! This was a super fun litter to see enter the world! Sadie is the best mom. Super attentive, and takes care of all their needs! There is really not much we can do to help these early weeks so we are so thankful to see her dominate this role. You can tell it really gives her a purpose and she is driven!

When will these Cavapoochon's be ready and are there any spots available?

Good questions! :) These pups will be ready to go the beginning to mid-December! Perfect timing for those family members who have been begging for a puppy for Christmas.

This litter was much larger than we expected so due to that we do have several available spots left! We don't pick out puppies until week 4 so that you can see how their little personalities and looks start to develop. We pick out in order of our reservation list so if you have your eye on a certain one, getting on the list faster ensures a better chance! August is here and summer is just flying by! We have had a busy and exciting couple of months here at Pleasant Home Puppies! After some Puppy delays we welcomed 3 litters of Cavapoo's and Cavapoochon's. Aspen, Opel, and Wrigley all had litters! We have sprinkled in a few pictures from each of the litters here in this blog!

We have had so much fun working closely with all of our adopting families! We are so grateful to all of the families that have decided to put there trust in us to provide them with their newest family member! Our summer litters have been adopted all over the country, from New York to Alaska, and everywhere in between. A few to Michigan, Chicago, South Dakota, and so on. We love to see the different environments and cultures that our puppies get to grow up in!

Litter Updates!

We are so thankful to currently have three beautiful litters! Opel with F1b Cavapoos, Aspen with Cavapoos, and Wrigley with Cavapoochons! Below are the updates!

Opel's Litter

Opel had 4 girls & two boys that are now 4 weeks old! There will potentially be a few open spots on this litter so if you are interested in one, please reach out! Aspen's Litter

Aspen's puppies are growing like weeds! The time is drawing so near for them to come home to you! We are excited for them to start their new lives, but it's always bittersweet to see them go! They have the goofiest, sweetest, little personalities and make us laugh all the time. They will get their final vet checks and health certificates this week so we are confident they are healthy for you. Wrigley's Litter

The long awaited Cavapoochon litter! For those of you who have been on our list for a while, thank you for your patience! We are thrilled to finally have some Cavapoochons for you, and boy are these ones cute! Wrigley had four girls and three boys, all are reserved. Right now these little ones are doing a lot of nursing, & sleeping. They are starting to open their eyes and ears but still very timid and unsure about this big world! Mom is their source of everything and Wrigs is a wonderful mama! We can't wait to watch them grow and form unique personalities!

What is a puppy doing at three weeks?

Three weeks old is a fun & exciting time for puppies! By now their eyes and ears are open and some are even starting to take their first steps. They are still totally dependent on mama for food and hydration but will start taking interest in food in the next few weeks. Still pretty tiny at about a pound and a half but growing like weeds!

The pups are here!

On Sunday 4/30 Aspen delivered 5 beautiful pups into the world! She did a fantastic job and is a wonderful mama to these sweet babies. With three girls and two boys this will be our, "Old Country" themed litter! Their respective names are Loretta, Dolly, Patsy, Johnny, & Hank! Once you have picked out your pup you are more than welcome to change the name and we will begin calling them your chosen name, but until then it gives them a sweet little identity :)

What are puppies doing their first week?

The first week of a puppies' life consists of a lot of nursing, sleeping, wiggling, and whining for mama. They cannot see or hear yet so they are 100% reliant on mama to protect & feed them. Mom will gently pick up puppies in her mouth and move them close to her if they start to get to far. It is a sweet and innocent time for all!

What Will I Need When Traveling With a Puppy?

Bringing home your new puppy is such a long anticipated and exciting day! Sometimes in the thrill of the day, people forget they may need some essentials! For those that buy your puppy from us, have no fear, we will send you home with everything you need! But it is always a good idea to be prepared! Here is what we suggest having on hand for your travel day,

Traveling with a puppy via plane

1) The first thing you will need to do is call your airline and tell them you will be bringing an in cabin pet! They only allow a certain number of pets per flight so if you don't call in advance you could be turned away. There is usually an $125 fee, depending on your airline, to bring your dog in cabin.

2) Purchase a doggy carrier that will fit underneath the seat in front of you (we provide this) . Sadly, unless you get a dog loving flight attendant, you will have to keep your dog in the carrier and underneath the seat directly in front of your feet. Thankfully it truly seems like a cozy place for the puppies and they almost always fall asleep for the duration of the flight! Here is the carrier we suggest and provide you, https://amzn.to/40QIsct

3) Water ! Often times puppies are nervous and maybe a little motion sick, so it is not unusual for them not to drink an entire travel day! This puts them at risk for dehydration so we have discovered a little tip that takes care of this problem! We like to send home a syringe, with a lid, full of water so that you can just slide it into the corner of their mouth and push! Once it is in their mouths their reflexes take over and they will swallow. That being said, some puppies are totally unaffected and will drink just fine, so it's still a good idea to bring a bowl! 4) Nutrical , a high calorie gel for dogs. We love this stuff and don't send home a puppy without it. Like I said above, puppies often get motion sick which can cause them to puke. This can lead to dehydration and blood sugar crashes which can be dangerous if not addressed. We like to put a few cc's of Nutrical into a syringe so that every few hours you can squirt a line into their mouth (they typically love the taste). This keeps their blood sugar regulated and keeps them from getting to a dangerous level. 5) Potty Pads for accidents! For plane rides we like to line our carrier with these so if they have an accident or get sick and puke, you can swap it out and keep a clean & comfortable environment! https://amzn.to/3zjYlMQ

6) Food ! We suggest checking with your breeder to ensure they are sending home some dog food or check ahead so that you can have the same kind. You never want to switch dog foods without slowly weaning your puppy off of their current one to avoid tummy troubles. We use Life's Abundance and will send some home if needed!

7) Extra small harness and leash. We suggest starting with a harness verses a collar. They tend to get the hang of that faster and are not pulling at their throats until they get the concept!

Traveling with a puppy via car!

If you are driving with a dog we suggest all of the same things listed above ! If you have the puppy on your lap, it is a good idea to put a Potty pad on your legs so if it gets car sick you can swap it out and keep your car, you, & puppy clean :) Happy traveling!

What Vaccines Does My Puppy Need?

Vaccines in the human world are a divisive topic, but thankfully among the dog world it is pretty widely agreed upon that they are necessary. From eating anything and everything they see...including poop, dogs are exposed to the whole gamut of germs, bacteria, and parasites.

The first step into figuring out what your dog needs is talking to your vet. Depending on where you got your dog you may or may not know if it has been vaccinated, so they can give you wise advise on how to move forward.

If you buy your dog from a credible breeder they should have, and pass on to you, all of the puppies vaccination records! If the breeder does not have this information or have access to vaccines, this would raise a red flag. All of our puppies go home fully vaccinated for their age, along with a vaccination record that you can give straight to your vet that shows what & when they were administered, as well as the continued vaccines they will need and the dates they will be due for them. You should not have to guess when or what they need!

Below is the schedule we follow with our pups that we feel equips them perfectly for a long, healthy life!

Day 2 - Marquis (used to treat Neospora, Toxoplasma and Coccidiosis)

Week 2- Pyrantel/Marquis (used to treat intestinal Roundworm, Hookworm, and Stomach Worm Parasites)

Week 4 -Pyrantel / Marquis/Bordetella (helps to ward off a frequent illness that is known as kennel cough)

Week 6 - Marquis & Ivomec (used to ward off parasites)

Week 8 - Neopar, Marquis/Pyrantel (used to treat Parvo)

Week 9 - NEOVAC DA2 (helps protect against Distemper)

Week 9.5 - Panacur, Ivomec

Week 11 - Marquis

Week 12 - Neopar/Neovac DA2

Week 14 - Marquis

Week 16 - Neopar/Neovac DA2

Opel's Cavapoo Puppies | Week 9 Update!

What's new?

First of all, we apologize for slacking on these updates! Our little boy came down with RSV and it consumed a lot of our time. Thankfully he is doing much better! The puppies are now fully weaned from mama and doing great on their own. They are eating hard food with no problem and loving it... maybe a little too much :) Although they are eating great now, when they get home to you, they may be a little nervous and be hesitant to eat. If this happens, try adding warm water to the kibble and blending it into "smoothie" form. They usually receive this very well!

What Does a Day Consist of for a 9-Week-Old Pup?

The puppies are a ball of fun at this age! Everything is new and exciting, and they are exploring the great big world around them. Their days consist of wrestling with each other, playing with us & our boy, napping, and eating! Did you know puppies sleep 18-20 hours per day? Sounds like the life to me!

Why did we Decide to Raise Puppies? | Pleasant Home Puppies

We get this question a lot! I think the more fitting question is why would we not want too? :) No, in all seriousness we have a passion for doing this and we want to give our dogs the love and care they deserve! It is a lot of work & we truly don't think it is a job for everyone unless you truly share that desire.

Our Story

Here's our story! Jordan & I (Julia) both grew up on farms 500 miles away from one another. I in Ohio & Jordan in Iowa. We didn't meet until we were college age, but little did we know our childhoods were very similar! We are both the youngest & dare I say, the favorite children...just kidding :) And although we admit we were a tad spoiled, we both had our duties around the house! Coincidently our parents both started raising dogs the same exact year! My parents with Airedale Terriers and Jordans' with Shichons!

Though our chores looked a little different, we both found ourselves with the dogs A LOT. My dog chores consisted of scooping the poop and cleaning the drains in the kennels when they got clogged which was a truly vial task. From this I was graciously given the lovely nickname of "pooper scooper." Clever.

From what I'm told, Jordan was the head guy in charge of brushing the dogs' teeth... and although he complains to this day about that task, I still think it was better than mine :)

Being a child and being surrounded by puppies was wonderful...until it was time to send them home to their new families. I distinctly remember getting super attached to one of the puppies from our dog, Scouts', litter. When the new owners came to pick her up, I ran up to the barn and hid with her until I was found and forced to hand her over.

Because of the hard goodbyes, and my nose being permanently immune to the smell of dog poop, I told myself I would never raise dogs once I got old. Famous last words, right? When I met Jordan and learned his family also raises dogs, I knew I was doomed. I am now happy to say that it was the best thing that could have happened because we now get share this passion together & we both absolutely love it!

Turns out it is contagious because all of our siblings on both sides, now also raise dogs. Which makes for wonderful resources, and lots of combined expertise, and experience.

How did we choose our breeds?

We started out with one of the breeds Jordan grew up with which was the Shihpoo. I was not familiar with this breed, but it took me about three seconds to give in. They are absolutely adorable and have such sweet little personalities.

Because Jordan's sister, & mom also raise Shihpoo's we decided we wanted something all of our own. So, we started researching! We wanted hypoallergenic, medium sized, smart, & of course sweet and cuddly! We came across the Cavapoochon and fell in love! They were everything we were looking for, and we loved the variation of color you can get in each litter!

From there our love for the Cavalier mixed breeds grew and we discovered the Cavapoo! Again, we fell in love! Recognizing a pattern here? We could not decide between the breeds, so we decided to do all three and haven't had one regret! They are all the perfect family dog and we have seen them bring so much joy to our home, and many others as well!

As our Shihpoo's are getting to the age we like to retire them, we will plan to move forward with just the Cavapoochon & Cavapoo breeds. Although we will terribly miss having Shihpoo puppies around, we make huge efforts to not over work our mama's and retire them in good age to ensure they retain great quality of life!

Why Not Adopt or Rescue Instead of Buying from a Breeder?

Growing up in Ohio, I have seen firsthand some puppy "facilities" that make me absolutely sick to my stomach. There are some wretched & horrible environments dogs have had to endure, and I absolutely think rescuing these dogs is a valiant and important role. But it also takes a certain type of person & knowledge to be able to rehabilitate these dogs. For them to truly heal, they need all of your time & attention and that is not a realistic expectation for everyone to be able to provide.

We also realize that thankfully not all rescue dogs are in that fragile of a state, but we do feel there is nothing wrong with falling in love with a certain breed and wanting to have one of your own. There are other ways to help shelter dogs, such as donation or volenterring to play or work with them.

We also know from experience that people have terrible allergies to certain breeds. We want to be able to provide pets that everyone, regardless of allergies, can enjoy and have in their homes... and sometimes a hypoallergenic dog is not easy to find in a shelter.

Lastly, we want to do this right and be an example for others! We believe it is fully possible to raise dogs in a safe, friendly, enjoyable environment, where they have great lives & are well loved! That is part of the reason we have our Guardian program! We know you can only show ample love to a certain number of dogs, and we never want to neglect any of them, which is why we started this program! All that to say we would NEVER discourage anyone from rescuing a dog. In fact, we whole heartedly thank those of you who have! All dogs deserve a good home and we hope to be able to help ensure that is happening!

Opel's Cavapoo Puppies | Week 6 Update!

What Does a Day Consist of For a 6-Week-Old Pup?

This is such a fun age as the puppies are truly starting to develop their unique personalities! Sweet yips and playful growls fill the air. They are now proficient at going in and out of the doggy door and are starting to get the idea of outside being their potty spot. Their days consist of napping, wrestling, & eating...lots of mom's milk & a little hard food too.

How to Crate Train Your Puppy

When it comes to potty training there are lots of opinions on what the best & most effective method is. One Google search on the topic, and you are entering a world of unexpected controversy and varying outlooks. In our opinion there are lots of methods that would give you great success, but from our experience, crate training is the one we prefer. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we hear,

Isn't crate training cruel?

Contrary to popular belief, when crate training is done right, it is actually an act of love and most of the time, your dog will learn to love their crates! From their ancestral roots, dogs desire a small, comfortable place to feel safe. When used correctly, the crate can mimic the den like feel they would have gotten in the wild. Just like we enjoy having a designated room in our home where we sleep, they like the same!

That being said we strongly discourage the use of a crate when used as a punishment or a place to hold the dog beyond a safe amount of time.

Why Does Crate Training Work?

Dogs have the innate desire to keep their areas clean! Because of this they will not want to go potty in their "den". When using correct timing and offering ample opportunities for your pup to use the restroom... they will naturally learn that they have a different place to go potty & they do not have to soil their spaces. It can take a little time for them to learn this and gain trust that they will be given the chance to go outside when they feel the urge, but they oftentimes catch on super-fast!

How to Crate Train?

Now for the big question! How to do it? Here's what you need to know,

- Keep your puppy in the crate anytime you cannot actively supervise them

This is important! If your puppy has free unsupervised reign of your house before they are potty trained, they are almost guaranteed to have accidents! This is literally setting them up for failure. There are LOTS of new smells and the area is not small enough for them to have the desire to keep it clean! This is not forever, but until they are fully house broke, you must be fully supervising them... when you cannot, they need to be in the crate.

- Make the crate a happy place

You want your puppy's crate to be a place they want to be! We'd encourage only giving toys when they are in the crate until they are fully trained. Make it comfortable with blankets, toys, and treats. We have also seen great benefit in offering their food and water in the crate, shutting the door for about 20-30 mins, and then taking it out. This will help them associate the crate with food, which they love, and also help you better understand when they will need to go potty. When food and water is out all the time it is VERY hard to gauge when they will need to use the restroom & also encourages obesity in your dog.

- Take them out after naps and every hour

If you have the time, take your puppy out to use the restroom every 45 mins - 1 hour the first week. They will not go every time, but this helps to ensure you give them the chance when they do need to! After the first week you can probably stretch it to every couple of hours, but you will soon learn what your dog can handle! We also suggest taking them out right after they wake up from a nap, this is a common potty time! As well as once at night for the first week, after that they should be able to hold it through the night!

- Take them to the same spot each time and ignore them :)

How would you like someone telling you to "go potty" three hundred times when you're trying to do your business? As much as you want to help, we encourage you to just let them do their thing! If you have the access to a little fence and you can supervise from the window, that is even better! Taking them to the same place each time if possible is also super helpful for them to smell previous potties and associate that place with using the restroom.

- Consider a bell on the door

We love bell training! If you put a bell on your door and take them out that same door each time they use the restroom, they will hear the jingle and start to associate that with potty time. Once they are fully trained and have freedom to roam your home, they will ring the bell when they need to go potty. We have done this several times and have seen great success!

Opel's Cavapoo Puppies | Week 4 Update

Opel's puppies are now 4 weeks old! They are each starting to develop their unique personalities which is so fun to witness.

Did you know these are Christmas pups? They will be ready to go home around December 19th! There are still a few spots left for this litter if you are wanting to treat yourself or a special someone to a Christmas they'll never forget.

What Does a Day Consist of For a Four-Week-Old Pup?

The puppies have found their legs! These guys & gals are still a little wobbly, but they are getting around all on their own. By the end of this week, we will introduce the doggy door and they will slowly get the idea to copy mom and begin going potty outside. This often helps them get the hang of potty training much faster when we send them home to you!

They are still getting almost all of their calories from mom's milk but this week they will also begin eating a little dog kibble and drinking water. They are growing fast!

Opel's puppies are growing stronger by the day & starting to discover the big world around them! One more lucky family reserved their spot for this litter, so we now have 5 spots left. For those of you on the list, or on the fence, please reach out with any questions... we are happy to talk!

This week we gave the puppies names! We went with a fall theme and had fun coming up with festive names. You are always welcome to change the names since they will not learn their names until they are older anyways, but we think it makes it a little more personal to give them names instead of numbers.

What Does A Day Consist Of For a Three Week Old Pup?

At three weeks old these little sweeties are just starting to find their legs. They are not yet totally walking but they find ways to scoot & drag themselves closer to mom and siblings. It will not be long before they figure it out and are prancing all around!

Today the pups got to soak up some time outdoors as we had some beautiful 70 degree weather, but a typical day consist of snuggling up and sleeping the day away! We hope you stick around to watch them grow!

The First Week with your New Puppy!

Puppies are the best. They bring a joy and lightness to your home that is unlike anything else! Much like a new baby, they light a spark in your heart that you may not have known was there. But the love they make you feel, isn't the only similarity to a new baby. Waking up at night & becoming all too familiar with the inner workings of your little one's digestive system also come to mind :) But fear not! We have some tips and tricks to help make this new adjustment much smoother! Before we break down how to hack this new change, let me give you an idea of what to expect from your new pup!

What To Expect from the First Few Days with a New Puppy

- A potentially nervous pup

Keep in mind your puppy just left everything they are familiar with. They are in an entirely new environment with new smells, sights, and sounds. Even though they are weaned from their mama already, they no longer have their siblings around to play & cuddle with. On top of that they most likely had a big day of travel to get to you so they may be especially tired and worn out. All this to say, this usually causes one of two reactions. Extreme shyness or one very hyper pup.

For Those Puppies that Act Shy You Can Expect Actions Such As,

- Shaking

- Hiding

- Whining

- Sitting or lying in one place for a long time

- Nervous peeing

These are normal actions for an adjusting puppy and as long as they are fed and watered, this is nothing to worry about! They are just adjusting and will soon warm up! This can also often times bring on the concern that the puppy has been neglected. We encourage you to get to know your breeder and make sure your soon to be pup is getting the love it deserves, & if so, don't second guess that when you bring your puppy home, and it seems nervous and timid. It is just trying to process all the new changes.

For Those Puppies that React with Lots of Energy Here's What to Expect,

- Super hyper behaviors

- Barking / whining

- Trying to jump out of our arms or constantly trying to get to your face

- Jumping in circles

- Nervous peeing

Once again, as long as they are fed and watered, just give them some time to adjust and calm down.

How to Help Your Puppy Feel More Comfortable

A lot of the solution to this is just time, it is amazing how quickly they adjust! We like to send home a blanket with the scent of the puppies' siblings with each of our pups. This is a good way to offer something comforting in an unfamiliar environment. Here are some other ideas,

- Stuffed dog with heartbeat! The sound of a heartbeat is comforting and helps to reduce anxiety. Here is a link to one that we like,

- Sending a shirt or blanket ahead of time with you & your family's scent that we can put in with your puppy

- If your breeder does not send home a blanket with their siblings' scent, you could request one

What to Expect from the First Few Nights with your new Puppy

I'm not going to sugar coat it, until your puppy gets adjusted...nights can be rough! We highly suggest crate training until your puppy is fully potty trained. That being said, during the training time your puppy would be in its crate at night. We recommend taking them out to potty once a night for the first week, and after that they should be able to go all night without having to use the restroom.

Expect Lots of Crying from your new Puppy

We know it can be hard, but we recommend putting the puppy's crate in a room that they cannot see you. Every dog is different, and you can experiment with what works best for yours, but we find most of the time they cry less if they cannot see you. If you would really like to have them in the same room as you, put a blanket over the crate.

Make your Puppy's Crate, a Happy Place

You ultimately want them to enjoy going in their crate. To do this, make it comfortable! Offer toys in the crate, treats, and even supplying their food and water to them when they are in the crate can all be ways to help them to enjoy this area.

Try Your Best to be Consistent and Patient with your Puppy

Just like a baby, it is difficult to hear them cry! But keep in mind, you are teaching them valuable skills that will increase their quality of life in the long run! This stage does not last long! In conclusion, the adjustment can be challenging but it goes by quick, and you and your pup will bond in the meantime! The hard times are SO worth it for the longtime companion you will gain in your dog!

What is an F1B Cavapoo?

With all these new mixed breeds and fancy names, it can be hard to figure out if you're buying a dog or a foreign car. We get it! And we are guilty of adding to the confusion with our breeds :) But take heart! It's not as complicated as it sounds!

What is an F1B?

In short, an F1B is first generation breed (F1) or in layman's terms, an already mixed breed, backcrossed (B), or bred, with a purebred. So, in the case of an F1B Cavapoo, it would be a Cavapoo (Cavalier & Poodle Mix) bred with a purebred poodle. Thinking about it too much can make your brain hurt so all you need to know is it is a mixed breed, bred to a purebred!

What is the benefit of an F1B?

Thanks to the double dose of poodle blood, F1B's are highly trainable! Poodles are some of the smartest dogs of all, but with that knowledge comes lots of energy. We love the F1B because the Cavalier lends it's calm and cuddly traits and creates what we think is the perfect personality. On the downside, Cavaliers tend to have weaker stomachs, so the hardiness of the poodle really helps to balance that out.

What color are F1B Cavapoo's?

F1B's can be black, white, tan, ruby, apricot, blue, brown, grey, & silver, but most commonly, ruby red. Their coats range from a beautiful wave to an equally beautiful tight curl. They produce less variety than the Cavapoochon but still enough to have a wide range of options when choosing your perfect pup!

How Big are F1B Cavapoo's?

Full grown our F1B's will weigh anywhere from 10-15 lbs and stand 12-16 inches tall! We think they are the perfect size!

Why does my dog eat its poop?

There's nothing more repulsive than watching your sweet fur baby take a big old chomp on a fresh pile of poo. But take heart, your dog is not a weirdo...this is actually a totally common and dare I say, normal, thing for your canine to do. Scientists even gave this crazy behavior a name, coprophagia. See, even poop eating can sound fancy these days.

Why Your Dog Eats Poop

So now that we've established that this vial habit has an official name and is relatively "normal", you may still be asking what the reasoning behind this action is. A study done out of the University of California determined that this is a behavior established long ago by wild dogs/canine species that would help colonize their guts in hopes to ward of the infestation of parasites. In addition, it was used as a survival mechanism to combat starvation when food was scarce.

In fact, something a lot of people don't know is that puppies are extremely dependent on their mother to lick their bums to stimulate bowl movements. And because dogs like to keep their areas tidy, the mother will then eat the poop. In turn the puppies naturally imitate this behavior.

How To Discourage This Behavior

1.) Keep dog away from it's poop

- Probably an annoyingly obvious answer but cleaning up after your dog is the best way to keep it from ingesting it's own poop

2.) Provide a multi vitamin

- One theory for this odd habit is that the dog is lacking nutrients. Aside from the potential benefit of less poop eating, a multi-vitamin can be a good idea to fill in any gaps in your pets diet. Here is one we like, Wholistic Pet Dog Supplement.

3.) Keep your dog entertained

- Making sure your dog is not eating it's poop out of pure boredom is another obvious, yet often overlooked solution. Make sure to be providing lots of toys for the times you can't play with them to help keep them stimulated! Brain games are also a fun past time for dogs! Should I be concerned about this behavior?

If your dog is given the proper nutrition, otherwise healthy, and well loved...there is no reason to fret about this behavior! If you feel your dogs nutrition is lacking or they may be bored, try some of the above suggestions. If all these boxes are checked, just write it off as a normal behavior and maybe invest in a tooth brush :)

6. They play great with other dogs

Do Cavapoochons and Shihpoos Shed?

We all have that one friend who has multiple shedding dogs in their home. Two words : Hair everywhere. On your clothes, on the couch, somehow a few loose strands seem to always end up in your mouth.

Needless to say you walk out feeling like you just visited a sheep shearing festival. All that to say, we love our fur babies and hair is just a part of that...but it doesn't have to be!

Do Cavapoochons and Shihpoos Shed?

The short answer with Cavapoochon's and Shihpoo's is no, but in total transparency, all dogs shed to some degree. If someone is trying to sell you a dog and says they never lose hair, they are not being completely honest.

Technically people don't shed either, but if you live with someone with long hair, you know that you will occasionally find loose hairs. BUT that does not mean some breeds shed VERY minimally and often not even enough to notice.

What Does Hypoallergenic Mean?

Aside from the fact that dog hair is all over your house, a lot of people struggle with debilitating allergies that make them think they may never be able to have a pet in the home. This is one of our favorite perks about Cavapoochons and Shihpoos. More often than not, those with allergies can happily have these pups in there home with no issue!

They are considered hypoallergenic which means they are less likely to trigger an allergic reaction. Now, keep in mind with any hypoallergenic breed, this does not guarantee you will not be allergic. We suggest finding a friend with the breed you are interested in and spending some time around their dog to ensure you are not allergic before bringing one home.

How Can I Reduce Shedding?

Dogs will naturally shed more in the spring/ summer when they are getting rid of their winter coat. This will happen regardless if they are indoor or outdoor pets. Keeping your dog well groomed and doing daily brushing is the best way to combat that minimal amount of shedding that you will get with a Cavapoochon or Shihpoo.

Stress can also contribute to a dog losing their hair, so of course we would encourage giving lots of love, cuddles, and good nutrition!

In Summary
